Pasture Pictures

I didn't get a chance to take pictures last night because everyone came up from pasture while I was out. After one day, they are already trained to come into the drylot for the night. I'm guessing it had more to do with the flies and mosquitoes than anything else but I'll take it.

There is so much relief right now for me with almost everyone out on pasture. No more hay (except the ponies and Mayhem and that will change soon). Everyone is pretty well content to enjoy the grass, water, and shade that summer brings. No more heavy winter coats, coveralls, boots, hats, gloves, mittens, etc. to don before trudging out. I can just walk out the door and not have a care in the world other than making sure everyone is comfortable in the heat.

Hard to think that 2 months ago, we were dealing with winter and snow. But I'm happy for summer even if it seems like we are dealing with July weather rather than June weather.

I will leave you with a few pictures from that first morning and their complete enjoyment of being out on pasture. Love seeing the look of pure bliss on the horses

April Blizzard

Well, we survived the blizzard, not without a couple of scares but we survived. Everyone is fine and healthy but we are going to have to look at a few of our buildings a little closer.

It started raining Friday. Luckily I'd put blankets on everyone I could so they wouldn't be miserable. I'd rather have soggy blankets than wet and cold horses. I had thought the blizzard was going to hit around 7pm but it never did. I went ahead and put horses in knowing that the blizzard was coming and wanted to make sure everyone was protected.

The mares and Junior's pen get the worst of the east wind and it was coming directly out of the east. It was so strong that it raised the roof of the hay barn slightly. Just enough to scare the bajezees out of me. I wasn't sure if the building would last through the storm or not but it did. I ended up leaving the mares and Junior in their stalls from Friday night until Sunday morning because the winds and snow were so fierce.

I'd let the big herd out of the barn Saturday morning so they could stretch their legs. They were not impressed. Within a half an hour they were coated in snow and looking at me to put them back in. Luckily they have two runin sheds they can get into so I wasn't worried. But I did put them back in Saturday night.

I'm glad the storm is over but now they are talking about another storm Tuesday night into Wednesday. So much for spring. Mike was actually supposed to leave Friday to head to the Black Hills but his plans were cancelled when they talked about how bad this storm was going to be. I'm glad because we might not have gotten that much snow, but there were drifts up to my hips in front of the barn.

I know there's more to tell but I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things.

The following pics were taken Sunday after the storm had passed. I think everyone was ready for some nicer weather.

What is It?

Is it a train? Is it a conga line? Is it a parade?

Nope, it's Maverick pretending that Dude is a large enough wind break during our latest snow storm.

Wishlist Wednesday

Wishlist Wednesday
This Wishlist Wednesday, we wish for salt blocks. Even in winter, we need to make sure that the horses receive enough salt in their diets.

A white salt block costs about $5 and will last the big herd a month (and the other two pens longer). You can find white salt blocks at TSC and Campbell Supply. I'm sure there are other locations as well.

Be My Valentine - Zeke

Meet Zeke
I'm not allowed to have favorites but Zeke, well, he's special. The first time I swung my leg over the saddle on Zeke, it was like I was riding my first Arab that I had retired. It felt as though I was picking up where I had left off except with a different horse.

Zeke was just that easy to get along with that after only six months, I was more than comfortable riding him to the church in my big poofy wedding dress for my big day. That is how much I trust him, and I still trust him. Don't get me wrong, my biggest spill also came from Zeke but that's all my fault.

I wasn't looking for a horse but I'm prone to notice arabs for sale. I found him in September 2009 and bought him as my personal horse. We did everything together. He's been my trail horse (although failed miserably because he'd prefer to jump creeks rather than walk through them), participated in parades, and was involved in not one, but TWO drill teams. In fact, he was the oldest horse on the team and keeping up with the younger "pups" and showing them off. He knew when it was the real deal. I'm guessing he once was a show horse in a previous career but we'll never know.

But at the age of 24, he told me that he was tired of performing for drill team so I retired him at that season. He's been enjoying retirement to the extreme since then. When I retired him from drill team, I put him into the Sanctuary program and he's been very happy ever since.

I knew Zeke was special but this past year has shown me the extent of how special he is. He's the typical arab but seems rather down to earth. He's always hung out with Bo and even Brego and Ivan when Bo was in eating. He isn't one of the pushy ones and is lower on the pecking order. But he takes everything into stride.

When Ivan was colicing last November, Zeke stuck fairly close to him. I thought it was odd. He went to far as to touch Ivan's belly where it hurt. Zeke was trying to make him feel better. After we lost Ivan, Brego went into a depression. I was worried sick for Brego. I shouldn't have worried. Zeke was there to bring him out of his depression. Now I see them play fighting all the time, tormenting each other. If Brego isn't picking on Zeke, Zeke is picking on Brego. It's so good to see Brego out of his depression and it's good to see that Zeke is moving around like a typical young arab instead of an old duffer.

He still watches over Bo. There was a bit of a tiff when Lightening came. Lightening immediate went to Zeke for protection and to follow. It was like they were one and the same but in the past few months Lightening has found his own stride. That's a good thing because Zeke is back to watching over Bo. I think Bo and Zeke have always been fairly close friends because Zeke knows that Bo has never been 100% healthy.

Zeke is very special and even at the age of 26 he doesn't seem like he's slowing down in his retirement. I'm looking forward to pampering him during his golden years because he deserves it. He's taken care of me countless times, kept me safe during all our rides, and now deserves (and will get) a retirement where he can be spoiled every day of his golden years.

Would you like to help spoil Zeke? You can sponsor him monthly for $50, which will buy him a bag of senior feed and ensure he gets the needed trims to keep him balanced and comfortable. In return, you'll receive monthly updates with pictures. I know Zeke is special to me, but I'd love to share this special horse with you!

Wishlist Wednesday

Wishlist Wednesday

This Wishlist Wednesday we wish for feeders (over the fence or rubber dish pans). The horses love their grain and are a bit hard on their dishes. But it's all worth it to see their faces as they devour their grain (it's a loo of pure bliss).

You can find feeders at TSC, Campbell Supply, or even online. The feeders run about $10.

Wishlist Wednesday

Wishlist Wednesday

This Wishlist Wednesday, we wish for senior feed. We aren't picky about the brand, we integrate the senior feed if/when we switch brands. The senior horses (and hard keepers) need senior feed to keep them fat, happy, and sassy during the long, cold days and nights of winter. We want to give them just a little bit extra when they need it to make sure they maintain the correct weight.

Even one bag makes a difference in making sure our senior horses and hard keepers maintain the right weight to keep them happy.

Forethought

Last night I went out to do chores (as I always do) but knew I was in for extra chores because of this upcoming storm. Originally the weatherman had predicted rain turning into snow, which meant wet and cold horses. Not good.

The wind was pretty fierce and I knew I'd have to leave Junior in his outside stall until we got back from church so I threw a blanket to ward against the wind chill. He's definitely changed since we first got him. He's gotten less accustomed to my movements and I'm not sure why. I wonder if he's going blind but I don't see any drastic changes in his eyes or even any spots. But the older he gets, the more unsure of anything I do. He's taken to spooking at the hose when I drag it through his pen to fill the water tank. And now he's taken to not liking his blanket or even having me come close with his blanket (or come close to him at all). He used to be a riding horse so he's used to people approaching him with a saddle pad and saddle. It's all very weird. As the years progress, he's more uncomfortable with anyone but horses approaching him. He's getting a bigger bubble as he gets older.

I also pulled in Bo, Jim, and Rain so that it would be easier to put hay in after we got back. Of course we didnt' get home until 9pm. There's nothing romantic about putting hay in late at night. Luckily most of the herd was out on the pasture, which is a good indication that the bales were done. What was left is mostly chaff and I'm disappointed that there's that much chaff to deal with. I am apparently a hay snob because all of our hay in years past never had any chaff and the horses would polish it completely.

I'm glad we put hay in last night instead of tonight. It's much colder today and there will be more snow. It's better to be pre-emptive and get things done before the bad weather hits (although it hasn't gotten bad and maybe it's not going to be bad this time around). But I'm definitely glad to see new bales sitting in the drylot for the horses.

They have figured out how to pull the hay nets off the bales and that drives me insane. So what used to take just a few minutes to get the nets on, takes twice as long because I have to secure the nets to the hay rings. I need to device a way to keep the hay nets on without having to spend a half an hour tying them to the ring.

I checked Bo out last night a little closer before putting his blanket on. He's doing much better. The cut on his leg is healing nicely. I really didn't think it would heal this fast or this nice, what with it being so deep and in such a bad spot. There was no way to stitch it so I figured it would never heal,  especially with Bo's heart failure.

But I'm wondering now about Bo. His heart rate was elevated because he was at the vet's. He's uncomfortable going anywhere and we've only taken him to a few different places over the years so even though he loads like a dream, he stays home most of the time. We like to keep the horses as calm as possible which means they don't actually leave the Sanctuary all that often. I really thought after we got home from the vet that Bo wouldn't be around much longer. But he's proved me wrong. I think with a calm environment, he'll do just fine.

The air pocket in his shoulder is also diminishing. It covered his entire right shoulder, started to creep up his neck and wrapped around his entire chest. I was worried but there was nothing we could do. The body is an amazing thing. Bo's air pocket is starting to diminish. There isn't nearly as much air in his shoulder. In fact, last night before I put his blanket on, I asked him to move and forgot and pushed his right shoulder. It crinkled. It was a little creepy but there was definitely less air. So investigated more and there is less air everywhere. Even in his chest, there is less air. There's still a big air pocket in his chest but that too will go away in time.

I figured with Bo in heart failure and then a deep leg cut and air pocket, that would be the end of him. But his body, even in heart failure is taking care of him. Now it's my turn to take care of Bo. We are keeping the ulcers at bay by feeding him Ramona feed. It's not easily accessible but we'll do what we can to keep him fed. It's a mix of oats, cracked corn and I believe soymeal. He's not gaining weight but he's also not losing weight. I also started adding in a scoop of senior to see if that would bother him but so far it hasn't.

I have been keeping a watchful eye on Brego. With Ivan gone, Brego is lost. Zeke on the other hand knows that Brego is depressed and has taken him  under his wing. I'm a little worried that it would cause Bo problems but I think everything is ok. So now it's the three amigos and Lightening will show up every once in a while. With Ivan now gone, there is less harassing for Bo. Ivan liked to torment Bo so that's at least one less worry... I guess.

Brego is doing well. He's still depressed but he's moving forward. Ivan wasn't the first best friend that he lost. He lost Sam a few years back but he wasn't nearly as attached as he was to Ivan. But now that he's friends with Zeke, hopefully he can adjust. I worry though because Zeke is 25 and how many more years will Zeke be around. Poor Brego will lose another best friend. But it's part of Sanctuary life.

But overall, everyone is healthy and happy. A few of the hard keepers are tucked in their blankets although I'm sure I overreacted. Now to deal with super cold temps. I guess that's what happens in winter. Just glad I had enough forethought to get everything done last night instead of tonight when it's so much colder.

Weekend Was a Bust

This weekend was supposed to be "Work Like a Dog Day" but it didn't happen. Mike had to go to the paying job and I was down and out with a migraines that left me stuck inside even though it was gorgeous! Let me just say, migraines should not last three days. And nothing touched it. But by Sunday evening, I was able to do more than just stare at the wall.

I actually started to panic Sunday night. Not a true panic attack but I definitely started to panic. For the entire month of July, we deal with temps in the 90s. All. Month.!!

Now that we are in August, we should be dealing with some heat but we aren't. It's cold. At least cold after being so hot for so long. Even then the trees are starting to turn leaves. Umm, that doesn't happen for another month! ANOTHER  MONTH!!!

I think I tend to panic anyway in August because summer is wrapping up, people are dumping their horses and going back to school, and the talk of fall is all around (and with me, that means winter). There have only been two years where I didn't panic about what was going on around me. That was five years ago when my son was born and two years ago when  my daughter was born. Otherwise, I freak out because I'm burned out from going so hard trying to fit everything in to three months.

I may have to start taking time off the paying job to get stuff done. It'll be the stuff I can do on my own and we'll have to figure out a time to really tackle the bigger stuff (like reroofing the hay barn and the garage). It's all going to take time and money, and we have neither.

I think I'll be sitting down tonight with  my planner/calendar and figuring out when I can squeeze in a few of the things that absolutely MUST be done.

I just don't know how to fit it all in.

So instead of ranting and complaining about my panic, I'll leave you with pictures of Zeke from the other night. He is most definitely enjoying his retirement. Anyone want to spoil this ol' boy with a sponsorship?

Happy 4th of July

Hope everyone had a fantastic 4th of July! We spent most of our time with Junior and Lace at their summer retreat (because that's where we have all our extended family get-togethers.

I know I'm struggling to get back into the swing of things but I wanted to wish everyone a Happy 4th of July.

Thunderstorms

I hate when the weatherman says we'll have severe storms with hail. The worry kicks in when I hear hail. There's just too much outside to have hail. I don't think we had any hail last night. If we did, I apparently slept through it. I did wake up to a downpour but was too tired to investigate. I think I'm exhausted and just played out this week already.

I did put Bo and Zeke into the barn last night because they were talking hail. Bo is getting pushed out of the herd more and more and I KNEW he wouldn't be able to get into the shed if we did have hail. He's still got some major health issues working against him. I need to make time for a vet appointment but the funds and time are lacking as of late. Bo was more than happy to go into the barn and he munched on hay most of the night while Zeke just stood around. Zeke is fat. Not that he couldn't eat but I think he turned his nose up at the hay!

When I woke up this morning and went out to do chores, I noticed we'd gotten a considerable amount of rain. We don't have a rain gauge so it's hard to tell how much we actually got but based on the water sitting in the fields, we got a lot!

No one seemed all that interested to head out to the pasture this morning. Odd because yesterday morning, Dude almost ran me over. They all decided to hang out in the mudlot drylot rather than head out to the pasture.

When I got back up to the house, I noticed that even my flower pots were holding water!! And when I drove in to the paying job, the driveway and gravel roads had some serious washouts where the water ran. So that's my indication that we got a LOT of rain. I'm not complaining. We need rain and so does the hay ground where our hay is located!

Otherwise it was a quiet night. We have some exciting news coming but don't want to announce until after the holiday. I'm trying to scramble and figure out how to get everything together for our family outings over the holiday. So, juggling the sanctuary, paying job, drill team, and extended family stuff. It gets a bit overwhelming at times but I guess that's life. I'm just hoping I can find another pair of jeans. I seem to have lost ALL of my clothes over the past month. I had enough clothes to get me through the week and now I don't even have that and I KNOW they are clean because I'm washing clothes every week but I think they've all disappeared. So the mystery continues, at least for a little while longer until I can find the time to do some investigating.

Happy Groundhogs Day

As most have probably heard, the groundhog says six more weeks of winter. In South Dakota, it's pretty well expected to continue to have winter until mid April. At least I am not surprised if we have an April blizzard, it's happened in the past.

Last night doing chores was (as my son would say) brutal. The wind was awful. It is so hard to adjust from almost 40 degree weather to teens but wind chills in the negative numbers. I ended up putting blankets back on Rabbit and Rain. Rabbit gave me that look and Rain is so thin skinned that I knew he'd be hanging out in the leanto out of the wind if I didn't put a blanket on him.

All of the blankets are starting to look tough. From tears, to the major rips, to the "mud" all of the blankets are showing their use (and age). We could use a handful of new/used blankets. Jim keeps destroying his and I'm not a good enough seamstress to repair them. Too bad I didn't follow in my heritage and become a seamstress like other women in my family tree.

On the bright side, with the 40 degree weather, most of the snow melted. The slush turned ice isn't too bad as most of that melted as well. There are a few spots that are still tricky (mostly right where I walk to feed and water the mares and Junior). Luckily I've only fallen once on the ice this season. I'm so glad no one was around. I'll just say I was making a snow angel rather than falling!

I'm keeping a very close eye on Bo. His back end is bothering him. I noticed the other day that he was down in his stall after eating his grain. I figured he was tired. But I found him down in his stall again last night after catching his foot on the door. It was like he'd stunned his leg with catching it. He mysteriously comes up lame every once in a while. I'm guessing  with the mud/muck and now frozen ground that he twisted something and its' still sore. But I'm going to keep an eye on him.

Bo has some how gotten demoted. When I brought Lightening home, I was afraid that he wouldn't make any friends. I hate having an odd number of horses in a pen but I had to put him in with the big herd. After a week, he became Zeke's best friend. It's odd to see the pair of Arabians hanging out rather than Zeke and Bo. Now Bo is off on his own. I don't like it. But Bo hates Lightening. I still cant figure out where Lightening is in the herd. He gets pushed around but he also pushes horses around.

Lightening is no pansy. The other night when I went to do chores in the dark, I hung out around the corner and watched Lightening and Chaos interact. It's fun to watch the when they don't know I'm there.

I'm still too far behind on our fundraiser so I might have to scrap the idea. I'm bummed because even if we only raised a few dollars, it would still be more than what we have now. And we need to get our pay paid for. It's been a tough year in getting stuff together and planned. Every  night I'm asleep with the kids and cant' seem to find the time to get anything accomplished. Anyone want to take on helping me with fundraisers? I could really use the help.
