Throwback Thursday - Feeling Nostalgic

I'm feeling nostalgic. Maybe it's the upcoming loss of Farley (on the heals of losing Junior), but sometimes doing the Throwback Thursdays is painful for me. It's about the end of August or first of September that we lost Thor (and Queen). That was about five years ago. Thor adored Queen and they both went down hill about the same time.

When I look at this picture I remember Thor, but I also remember and realize that this the date/timestamp on the picture indicates the day we lost Joe. Joe was Thor's friend and companion from the time they were rescued at auction by another rescue. Hard to believe that Joe has been gone for eight years already.

There's been so many losses to the Sanctuary but that's what a Sanctuary for senior horses has to face on an almost daily basis. What is the life quality of each living being? Are they having more good days than bad? Although we have a Board of Directors, the final decision comes down to me.

Sometimes I feel like the angel of death. But I know that if I didn't step in, no one else would. But it's still difficult some days.

So today's Throwback Thursday is to days gone by. Remember to hug your loved ones, tell them you love them, and spend an extra five minutes with them. Life if hectic but remember to take time out to spend time with your loved ones because one day, they won't be around.

Happiness Happens Day 2

#HappinessHappens Day 2: Today's Happiness Happens is for fly masks. I dug out about half of what we need for fly masks Monday night. The flies have been bad all year but now that it's August, they get visious knowing that the end is near. I want to make sure the horses are as comfortable as possible.

Now to find the other half dozen that we need to keep the entire herd comfortable (and to remember to always remove them at night so that Maverick doesn't pull EVERY fly mask off  and stomp on them. I guess he was jealous that he didn't get a fly mask).

Wishlist Wednesday - Small Squares of Hay

Today's Wishlist Wednesday is for small squares of hay.

We typically use big rounds of hay but small squares of hay are a necessity. We use small squares when there's a blizzard and all the horses are stalled. We use small squares when we can't get the big rounds in right away. We also use small squares for the ponies when their "pasture" runs out and we need to move them but don't have time.

We are always in need of small squares and would love a trailer load full to make sure that we have happy horses this winter.

Happiness Happens Day 1

Today's #HappinessHappens is our happiness to be teaming up with KatDog Fashion.

For the month of August, KatDog Fashion is donating $1 for every item you purchase from them. They have some AMAZING items for sale not just for yourself but for your loved ones (both two-legged and four-legged).

Don't know what to get that hard-to-get person for Christmas or birthday? Check out KatDog Fashion and see what they have. It's always a great feeling to have your Christmas shopping done long before the snow flies and the cold sets in.

Funds from KatDog Fashion will go towards buying grain (mostly senior feed) for Jim to keep him fat and happy. Lets keep an old man happy and content this winter with a full belly of grain!

Super Happy on this first day of #HappinessHappens!

Tip Tuesday - Storing Hay

It's haying season and many are thinking hay. It's also time to think about fires. No one ever wants to think about hay and fires but it's a good idea to have an understanding of what can happen.

So today's #TipTuesday infographic is about storing hay and fire.

Personally at the Sanctuary, we are trying to schedule a time to pick up our ordered hay. I'm hoping with hit having sat out for a few weeks, that there's less risk of fire. We've already had one fire on the place, we don't ever need another.

Here's to a successful haying season.

Tornado

Nothing like walking out of the house with your kids in the car, looking up into the sky and spotting this....

It scared the holy bajeezus out of me! I've never seen one form. If my kids hadn't been in the car, I probably would have stayed to watch and see what and where it went. It was reported to have been on the ground for 7 minutes. I think I watched it form before it hit the ground. But with kids in the car, I decided to bolt.

In the almost 13 years we have lived here, this is only the second tornado I've seen. The first one I didn't see and didn't realize it was a tornado until afterwards. That was in 2013. We sustained damage to outbuildings that are yet to be repaired because there's been no time.

Luckily there haven't been any reports of damage from this tornado but I had no idea that we would even have severe weather yesterday.

I'll take a good old fashioned blizzard over a tornado any day. I can prepare and plan for a blizzard even if it lasts for a week. I can't plan for a tornado!
