Update on Jett/Sir Prize

Its' hard to believe that the horse in the picture is the little foal that I literally picked up and carried around after the first few hours of birth. Way back in May 2011 we picked up Savanna and she gave birth to Sir Prize, now named Jett. He's become an amazing horse and I'm so glad and thankful I get the opportunity to watch the horse and owner grow and bond. I've seen this horse do some amazing feats and I'm blown away.

I'll leave you with two pics of Jett from December (on the one day of sunshine). And yes, the pictures were taken by Jett's owner (we need to convincer her to come take pics of the Sanctuary horses!!!)

Looking Back at Jett

For some odd reason, I decided to look back at the blog from a few years ago and went to June of 2011 (figured why not look and see what we were doing this time that many years ago).

And look who's face I saw:

That little bugger has really grown into a stellar gelding.

Jett is now doing drill team performances AND mounted shooting. He's sure come along way!

This is Jett all grown up (picture is from this summer!)

Riding

Guess who got to ride the black horse last night? ME

Do you recognize him? Think  back to a little baby posted earlier this week. That's right, it's Jett! All grown up.

We had practice last night and Jett and his buddy Sunny were there for practice (Jett's owner is in charge of the drill team). After practice, I got to hop on Jett. Wowza. Is that boy trained!! He is even more responsive than Rain and there's a HUGE age gap. In fact, with Jett being six this year, he ranks up there with Zeke for being trained. That's right!

So happy to get to watch Jett and his owner through the years. And watch Jett grow up and learn. It's amazing what an education will do for a horse.

I get so wrapped up with the older horses that I forget that they were all young once, just like Jett. It's just a pleasure to watch him. I didn't really have much to do with anything other than being at the action and bringing Savanna home for $20, skin and bone. Little did I know Jett was in that "wormy" belly.

It's amazing what will happen when you take a chance. And even more when you put a ton of time and effort into that chance.

I'm just so happy that everything worked out. Had Jett stayed with us, he would have been lost in the shuffle of the old horses and Jett really is the type that needs attention. And it would have been a shame after seeing what he can do. I can't say that I'm nearly as dedicated as Jett's owner. In fact I am not as dedicated a rider, but Jett's owner is one in a million and it really is fun watching Jett progress.

Crazy how life's twists and turns will lead you to some amazing horses.

Keep up the great work Jett and Stacy.

Happy Birthday Jett!

Time really flies!!

Happy Birthday Jett!! I can't believe it's been five years already. You've grown to be a very stunning gelding and have come a long way. That education is thanks to your adopter who's put a lot of time and training into you.

Hard to believe you were such a peanut that I could pick up.

Don't work your momma over too much Jett! She deserves a huge bouquet of flowers for all your orneriness.

Happy Fifth Birthday Jett

Wishlist Wednesday

Wishlist Wednesday. We wish for Ondura sheeting (it's actually just asphalt sheeting). You're probably asking what's Ondura sheeting? It's the roofing material we have on the barn. It's on sale right now at Menards for $20 a sheet. I don't know how many we need to repair the hay barn but we need to do something before the roof starts leaking worse than it already does. It leaks pretty bad right now. I figure 10 sheets will get across the roof but we'll probably need close to 30 or more to do one side of the hay barn. We have the special nails already but we need the sheeting to protect our hay and alfalfa.

And the little pipsqueak in the picture is Sir Prize, now named Jett. He's all grown up but I wanted a picture of the barn and well..who doesn't love a baby picture!

Wishlist Wednesday

Wishlist Wednesday - It may sound silly, but our wish is for light bulbs in the barn. That's right, light bulbs. We need 100 watt light bulbs. I'm down to one light bulb in the barn (not including the one over the grain). It seems that the lights always burn out about the same time. I'd been dealing with two being burned out for the past few weeks and now another one has blown. We only have four in the stalls so it's not too bright but when one burns out, I can tell. And now that three of the four are burned out, it's pretty dark.

And the pic....that's of Jett (aka Sir Prize when he was first born). That's the barn he was born in (and the barn that needs lights!)

Happy Birthday Jett!

Happy Birthday Jett! You have really become a very stunning and educated gelding. I know I didn't have any part of your education, but I'm so proud of you! Hard to believe that you could have ever been so itty bitty that I could pick you up and carry you around the barn.

Hope you have a great birthday!

A Ride with Maverick and Jett

This weekend Jett’s owner, S,  invited me out for a ride. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I debated on who to ride.  With the temperatures soaring, I knew I couldn’t ride Rain and I wanted to give Zeke some time off. I really needed to ride Chaos, Maverick, or King. I figured we’d be riding some roads, so that eliminated King. So it was between Chaos and Maverick. I figured I’d better ride Maverick since I hadn’t ridden him in ages.  Oh sure, we did some ground work the other day but no serious riding.

So I grabbed Maverick and headed over. Silly me, I almost ran out of gas. I need to start carrying a few gallons of gas just in case. Thank goodness for friends!! They filled my tank up enough so there was no worry about running out of gas on my way back to the gas station after our ride. You’d think after almost 10 years of owning that truck that I would know better. Twice in the past year I’ve had that darn gas light come on. Knock on wood that I’ve been lucky.

But back to the ride. Jett is coming along nicely. We had a beautiful ride and the horses handled themselves amazingly well considering we had a dog come charging out to the end of the driveway and barking at us, deer jumping out of a grove of trees, and traffic (luckily the traffic was really patient and didn’t try to fly past us. I was very surprised.)

I wasn’t sure how well Maverick would behave himself but he did amazingly well. The only thing I did was try to be a social butterfly and whinny to horses that he saw along the way. Otherwise, he was a perfect gentleman. He really is a good trail horse. I’m doing him such an injustice by not riding him more. Hopefully this month I’ll be able to sneak in a few more rides.

We rode to a place I’ never been before. It was so relaxing and enjoyable. Normally I’m a nervous wreck but Maverick kept at an easy pace and we just wandered along. When it was time to head back, Jett picked up the pace, but Maverick, well, he apparently had no sense of direction because he didn’t pick up the pace when we turned around. In fact, he started walking slower. Crazy gelding. Considering I’ve been on him maybe a half dozen times this year (and it’s already July), Maverick was outstanding.

Jett was amazing as well. He had a bit of a different opinion on leaving the place, but after a mile of working with him, he headed on down the road like he was an old pro instead of just learning. Jett’s owner has done an amazing job with him. I wish that every horse would have the opportunity to have such an education.

I personally can’t train a horse. Oh I know, we are always “training” but to teach a horse to be ride able is beyond my abilities. So I commend those that can. I simply am not a good teacher.  From what I’ve learned about Jett’s daddy, I’m thinking that Jett may have a bit of an ornery streak in him like his daddy. But he does have a soft side to him like his momma, Savanna. I didn’t get any pictures of our ride, but I’ll have to go and get some pictures of Jett so you can see how he’s progressing.

Given time, patience, and proper education, horses like Maverick and Jett can go a long way. I look forward to watching Jett and see how his education progresses. And for Maverick, I’d really like to see what more he has. He has a lot of potentially that I haven’t tapped in to yet. He makes a fantastic trail horse but I know there’s more than he can do and he has a mind that’s sharp as a tack. It would be nice to engage that mind of his and get him to start thinking. We’ll see how things progress. Anyone have any cattle they’d let us play with? I think Maverick might be cow-y.

Jett Update

Just saw an update from Jett's owner. Here's what she had to say about this very lucky boy!

So proud of this little guy. I've only been on him a few times, but today we trotted circles and then loped in circles and even chased a couple cats! No buck in him today. .. even going into the lope. The pictures are after our ride.

Doesn't he look like the spitting image of his momma, Savanna?
