Mid July Update

I've been a bit MIA as of late and I'm thinking it's probably going to continue. I'm pretty well exhausted so it's a bit hard for me to come up with any blog posts. We've been staying busy just not really focused on promoting the Sanctuary or doing anything more than minimal chores.

The mosquitoes are terrible. Either something changed in what the mosquitoes like or there's just that many but I'm eaten alive every night. I'm trying to get out sooner to do chores so that I can get back in before they carry me away. I used to never be bothered by them but this year is different. (It could also be that I walk WAY slower than I used to.) Luckily I don't have any reactions to them. Some of the horses are the same way but others are just a mass of bumps.

Each night they all hide in the lean to off the barn. It's amazing that all 10 horses can get crammed in to the lean to. Zeke and Bo are usually the last ones in (and its' probably the safest place for them so they don't get beaten up). But every morning when I let them out on pasture, they are all crammed in to the run in shed.

Junior is picking up weight again. I don't think it's the grain necessarily doing the trick. I think it's more that the pasture they are in is in much better shape than the other one. I'm still waiting for the excavator to show up and tear up the pasture they were in. The sooner he is done with the job, the sooner I can reseed and hopefully still be able to use that pasture for this fall. I don't wan the horses on the road pasture because there's too many people who think they should road hunt in our area. I want to keep the horses as safe as possible.

Luckily the heat hasn't been taking it's toll on too many of the horses. I'm always worried that the heat will bother the horses and they will start losing weight. Only Rain is super sensitive to the temps but he seems to be doing ok. He hasn't lost a pound from what I can tell.  The flies are mean and the mosquitoes are terrible but everyone seems to be doing ok with the heat. I on the other hand am not handling the heat very well.

We had a weekend filled full of horse activities. Unfortunately, it wasn't anything for the Sanctuary. I'm guessing that we'll simply continue to coast along the same way we have been for the next two to three months.

The one thing I will ask. Please don't insult me by suggesting you "help" me by riding one of the Sanctuary horses because, well, I obviously can't ride. I don't need help riding horses (they weren't getting ridden before I became pregnant either). What I need help with is chores and maintaining the outbuildings and fences. The horses are content to be on "paternity/maternity" leave.  Oh sure a good grooming wouldn't hurt because they have dreadlocks but that'll all be taken care of when I get back on my feet. But for now, what I need is help making sure that what we do have doesn't fall down around our ears and that what we do have is ready for winter. The horses can be out of shape. They don't mind being fat and happy. I don't mind either.
